The Difficult OneGalatians 6:5

Everything Gets Arranged Around One Person

This message is for the reader whose whole family quietly organizes itself around one relative, and who has been doing the managing for so long they cannot see themselves apart from it

Nobody has ever said it out loud, and everybody knows.

The date gets picked with them in mind. The seating gets thought about. Somebody rings ahead. A subject gets kept off the table, and a second person gets briefed about the subject being kept off the table, and by the time anybody sits down there has been about four hours of invisible work done by two or three people, and none of it appears anywhere.

A lot of that invisible work is yours.

Now, before I go any further, two things I am not going to do, and I want you to hold me to both.

I am not going to tell you what is wrong with them. I have not met them, I am not qualified, and putting a label on a relative from a distance is the single most popular and least useful thing an article like this can do. It feels like insight and it changes nothing.

And I am not going to help you build a case. You could build one; you have the material. But a case is a thing you carry, and you already have enough to carry, and this article is about putting something down rather than picking something up.

And there is a line I need to draw here plainly. If what is happening is not difficulty but abuse, if you or somebody in that family is being frightened, controlled or hurt, that is not a personality and it is not managed by anything in this article. Get advice from somebody qualified where you live, this week, and make yourself safe first.

Every man shall bear his own burden

There is a short line in Galatians that sits a few verses after a much more famous one, and the pairing is the whole point.

For every man shall bear his own burden. (Galatians 6:5, King James Version)

His own burden.

Two verses earlier Paul has said to bear one another's burdens, which people quote at each other constantly, and then he says this, and the two are not a contradiction. The first word is about a crushing weight that a person cannot lift alone. This one is a different word, and it means something closer to a pack: the ordinary load of a life, which each person carries themselves.

So there is a category of thing that belongs to a person and does not transfer, and Scripture says so plainly, in a chapter that is otherwise all about helping each other.

Their moods are their own pack. Their reaction to the seating is their own pack. Their comfort in a room is, to a degree that will feel shocking to you, theirs.

Galatians 6:5 gives each person their own load in the middle of a chapter about mutual help, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach somebody who has been carrying two packs since they were about nine.

You are carrying your own load and it was never meant to be two, and their pack has never once been yours to shoulder. Galatians 6:5 says every man shall bear his own burden, set deliberately beside the command to bear one another's, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a line rather than a coldness.

You did not decide to do this

Here is the part I want to be gentle about, because you did not choose this and it is important that you know I know that.

You were about nine when it started. You noticed that if you did a certain thing, the room stayed calm, and if you did not, it did not. A child who notices that does not make a decision; they develop a skill, and then the skill becomes a personality, and by thirty it is not something you do, it is who you are at family events.

So this is not a fault and nobody is telling you off. Galatians 6:5 assigns the load without assigning any blame, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over somebody who learned to keep a room calm before they were ten.

But a skill that is not needed and is still running is a cost, and you have been paying it for thirty years without an invoice ever arriving.

You are not at fault for learning this, and it has never once been a decision you actually made. The written word gives each person their own pack without a word of accusation attached, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the blame out of a habit somebody formed at nine.

Name one, and do not do it

So here is the assignment, and it is small on purpose, because the large version of this is a confrontation and I am not sending you into one.

Name out loud one thing you have been managing for them. And do not do it this week.

One thing. The specific thing you always do. The phone call before, the subject you steer away from, the seat you take so somebody else does not have to, the message you send afterwards to smooth something over. Galatians 6:5 gives that pack back to the person it belongs to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a reflex finally gets named.

Say it out loud first, alone, so it exists as a fact rather than as a reflex. Then let that one thing not happen.

And here is what to expect. It may go fine, which will be strange. It may go badly, and if it goes badly the thing you need to notice is that it went badly for them and not for you, and that the badness had somewhere to live other than inside you for the first time in years.

Galatians 6:5 leaves a person's own load with them rather than moving it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds somebody steady the first time they let a thing be uncomfortable.

You are able to leave one thing undone, and it has never once been your job to keep every room calm. Galatians 6:5 leaves each person's pack where it belongs, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody the first week they do not make the phone call.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are carrying a load that was never assigned to you, and nobody in that family has ever once asked you to. I am not diagnosing anybody and I am not building you a case. Galatians 6:5 says every man shall bear his own burden, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who separates a pack that is yours from one you picked up at nine years old.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free to put one thing down, and the room has never once been yours to keep calm. The written word gives each person their own burden in a chapter about helping each other, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds somebody steady while a thing goes badly for somebody else.

Name one. Do not do it this week.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Reflex I learned at nine years old to keep a room calm, you are not who I am. Galatians 6:5 says every man shall bear his own burden, so by the Holy Spirit you do not run my week in the name of Jesus.
  2. Belief that the peace of this family runs through me, you have no ground and you never had any. The word gives each person their own pack in a chapter about helping each other, and by the Holy Spirit I am done carrying two.
  3. Father, You assigned the load and You did not assign it twice. Your word says every man shall bear his own burden, so by Your Spirit I name one thing today, and I let it go undone this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
