You have already had it about nine times.
Not the gathering. The conversation. The one where they say the thing and you say the thing back, and you have run it while driving and while brushing your teeth and once at two in the morning, and in most versions you come off rather well.
And here is what that has cost, which nobody mentions. By the time you walk in, you have already had nine arguments with somebody who has not said anything yet. You arrive tired, braced, and slightly primed, and being primed is visible from across a room even when nobody could say what they are seeing.
I am not going to give you lines. Some articles will hand you a script for the moment your aunt says it, and a script means you go in waiting for the cue, and waiting for the cue is the whole problem rather than a solution to it.
I am not going to tell you to skip it. And I am not going to tell you that you have to go. Both of those are decisions about a family I have never met, made with none of the facts, and neither of them is mine.
What I have got is one verse and one small practical thing to do before you leave the house.
As much as lieth in you
There is a sentence in Romans about peace with people, and it is unusual for how carefully it is fenced.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. (Romans 12:18, King James Version)
If it be possible. As much as lieth in you.
Two qualifications in one short line, and Paul puts them there deliberately, because he is not writing to people with easy families. He is saying: aim at peace, and here are the two limits, and the limits are not a failure of faith, they are in the instruction.
If it be possible admits that sometimes it is not.
As much as lieth in you draws a line down the middle of the room and gives you one side of it. Your tone. Your face. What you do when the thing is said. And that is all, and the other person's side is genuinely not yours.
Romans 12:18 fences the command with two limits rather than demanding an outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach somebody who has been holding themselves responsible for how a whole afternoon goes.
You are responsible for your side of the room and no further, and the outcome has never once been the thing you were commanded to produce. Romans 12:18 says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes those two limits part of the instruction rather than an excuse.
Bracing is not preparing
Now the distinction that will change the day, and it is not the one people expect.
Rehearsing feels like preparation. It is not. It is nine arguments you have already had, and each one leaves a residue, and by the ninth you are not walking into a room, you are walking into the tenth round of something.
Romans 12:18 gives you your own side to keep and nothing to anticipate, and the Holy Spirit is not the one running the two in the morning version.
Real preparation is different and it is almost boring. It is knowing what time you are leaving. It is having eaten something. It is having decided, in advance, that you are not going to answer the thing if it gets said.
That last one is not weakness and it is not letting them win. Not answering is one of the things that lies within you, and it is a whole legitimate option, and it is available even when a reply would be justified.
You are able to prepare without bracing, and rehearsing has never once been the same as being ready. The written word assigns you your own part and nothing more, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a person out of the tenth round of an argument that has not happened.
Decide the time and tell one person
So here is the assignment, and it is the whole of it.
Decide before you go what time you are leaving. And tell one person.
An actual time. Not when it feels right, not when I have had enough, because those thresholds move when you are inside a room and they always move later. Romans 12:18 draws its limit before the situation rather than during it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a decision made while a person is still calm.
Tell one person. Your spouse, a friend by message, whoever is going with you. Saying it out loud to somebody makes it a fact rather than an intention, and it means there is one other person in the world who knows what you decided while you were still calm.
And when the time comes, go. Not dramatically. Say the ordinary thing, thank whoever hosted, and leave.
Leaving early is not a defeat and it is not a message. It is the most normal thing in the world, and the reason it feels like a statement is that you have been treating the whole day as a test you can pass or fail.
Romans 12:18 puts a limit into the middle of the command itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody walk out at four having done their part.
You are able to set the time and keep it, and leaving has never once been the same as losing. Romans 12:18 fences the peace with what lies within you, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody putting their coat on at a time they chose in advance.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not responsible for how that day goes, and the whole of it has never once rested on you. I am not telling you to go and I am not telling you to stay away. Romans 12:18 fences the command with two limits, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who hands somebody their own side of the room and takes the rest off them.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are free to do your part and leave at the time you chose, and leaving has always been an ordinary thing to do. The written word says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a person putting their coat on at half four.
Decide the time. Tell one person.
Declare this over yourself
- Nine arguments I have had with somebody who has not said a word yet, you are finished. Romans 12:18 says as much as lieth in you, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get another August in the name of Jesus.
- Belief that the whole gathering rests on how I handle one sentence, you were never in the instruction. The word fences the peace with two limits and puts them there on purpose, and by the Holy Spirit I am done arriving braced for a fight that has not happened.
- Father, You wrote the limit into the command itself. Your word says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, so by Your Spirit I decide my time before I go, and I tell one person.
