They Joined And I Never Made Them Belong

They have been coming to this house for eleven years and you could not tell anybody what they do all day.

You know the job title. You do not know what the work is actually like, or what they wanted to do instead, or the name of the town they grew up in, or one single thing about their mother.

And they have sat at that table perhaps two hundred times.

This is the last article on this site, and it is written to you as the insider, which is the uncomfortable seat, and that is deliberate. Every other piece here has stood beside you. This one is standing slightly behind you and looking at the room the way somebody else sees it.

Because here is what happens at that table and you have never noticed it, because it has never once happened to you.

Somebody starts a story from about 1997. Nobody explains it. Four people laugh at a name. Somebody says the thing about the caravan and the whole table goes up, and there is one person there with a pleasant expression on their face who has heard about the caravan for eleven years and still does not know what happened.

I am not going to litigate anybody's grievance. If your relative has said things about your husband or wife, that is a real thing and it is not this article, and this one does not ask anybody to accept being treated badly as the price of being welcomed.

This one is only about the person you have never made room for, and about the fact that making room was always yours to do because you were the one who was already inside.

As one born among you

There is an instruction in Leviticus about the person who comes from outside, and the standard in it is set startlingly high.

But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 19:34, King James Version)

As one born among you.

Not tolerated. Not made welcome, which still keeps the welcomer in charge of the door. As one born among you, which means the distinction is supposed to stop functioning altogether.

And the reason given is memory: ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. The whole obligation rests on the insiders remembering what it was to be outside, and being unable to use that memory as a story rather than a discipline.

You have never been the outsider in that room. That is exactly why you cannot see the room, and it is also exactly why the instruction is aimed at you and not at them.

Leviticus 19:34 puts the whole obligation on the one who was already inside, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land on a person who has been at that table their entire life.

You are the one holding the door, and it has never once been theirs to open from outside. Leviticus 19:34 says the stranger shall be unto you as one born among you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts the obligation on the insider rather than the newcomer.

Nobody meant any of it

Now the thing I want to protect you from, which is a false conclusion.

Nobody in that family excluded them. There was no decision, no conversation, nothing anybody would recognize as unkindness. Everyone has been perfectly pleasant to them for eleven years and would be shocked to hear this described as a problem.

That is precisely how it works. A family that has been a family a long time runs on shorthand, and shorthand is efficient for the people who have it and is a locked door to everybody else, and nobody ever notices a door they can walk through.

Leviticus 19:34 addresses the ordinary condition of a settled people rather than a wicked one, and the Holy Spirit is not putting anybody's family on trial today.

So this is not guilt and it is not an accusation. It is a thing you can now see that you could not see last week, and the only useful response to that is a small action rather than an apology.

You are seeing something ordinary rather than something wicked, and nobody in that house has ever once meant it. The written word instructs a settled people about the one who came from outside, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a discovery into an action instead of into guilt.

One real question, and the whole answer

So here is the assignment, and it is the last one on this site.

Ask the person who married in one real question this week. And listen to the whole answer.

Real: something you do not already know the answer to and would not have asked at a table. What was the town like. What did you want to do before you did this. What was your mother like. What is the part of your job you actually enjoy.

And listen to the whole answer. That is the hard half. You will feel the pull at about twenty seconds to connect it to something in your family, to say oh that is like when we, and every one of those turns their answer back into your family's story, which is the exact thing that has been happening for eleven years.

Let the answer be long. Let it be about their people and not yours. Ask a second question that comes out of the first one, which is how they will know you were actually listening.

Leviticus 19:34 sets the standard at one born among you rather than at politeness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody finally asks a real question at their own kitchen table.

You are able to ask and stay quiet through the answer, and the room has never once been theirs to join on their own. Leviticus 19:34 requires the newcomer to be as one born among you, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a first real conversation eleven years late.
